5 lb. Bass Story

There is a five pound largemouth bass stuffed and mounted over my fireplace mantel. How it got there is an unusual story.

I was twelve years old and fishing in my grandfather's stock tank. Not having much success until I saw a huge fish go by just under the surface a few feet from where I was standing. I pulled in my line and dropped it near where I last saw the monster, bobbing my worm up and down. Suddenly my rod tip bent 90 degrees and my line took off. I started reeling furiously, hauling the fish in almost to shore when I heard a noise behind me.

I looked over my shoulder and saw a rattler about 5 feet behind me. I needed to GO! but no way was I giving up the biggest fish I had ever caught. I released the line on my spincast reel and started moving. I went to the right  and was about forty feet away from the water's edge, keeping an eye on the snake, when grandpa pulled up in his pick up. He got out of the cab with his shotgun ( I guess he could tell from my actions something was wrong) and I started yelling "snake!" and pointing. I started reeling my line in, figuring I had lost the fish, but once the line grew taut it started wiggling and I knew I still had him.

Poor bass! I hauled him across the forty feet of open country (dirt, rocks, grass) to where I was standing, no way was I going near that pond. Grandpa blasted the rattler, snake parts went flying all over the pond, and  I held up my fish for him. "Good job!" he said, smiling.  We went to the barn and my bass weighed in at a little over 5 lbs.

Grandpa had the fish mounted for me, and it hung in my parent's house until I was married. Now it hangs over my mantel and I get as much pleasure from telling the story as I'm sure Grandpa did.
