If you are just starting out fly fishing, like I am, I have no idea what patterns to use. I know you use poppers for bass, but that's about the extent of it. They sell real pretty flies at Wal-Mart, but I think they are more to attract the fishermen rather than the fish.

So I asked my friend at the Streamside Angler what patterns to use on those hatchery trout. He  recommends:

Bead head hare's ear nymph (not a dry fly, but that's ok, no having to dry the damn thing out so it'll float every three casts)

San Juan Worms - ( I understand this, it's a worm )

San Juan Worms - red (ditto)

These patterns can be purchased at the Streamside Angler. Tell him we sent you.
