    Let's not go crazy here or anything, but having some supplies on hand just in case sounds like a good idea. 

    Having some supplies, basic stuff, makes sense ( earthquakes, floods, snow, hurricanes, tornados, power outages during the middle of winter )  because anything can happen. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars. How about two weeks worth of canned meat and soups in the cupboard? It won't get you through the Apocalypse but it will get you through 6 days of your ATM card not working at the grocery store.
